Current Activities

It was agreed that while organising the Chapter activities, talks and 
meetings, needs of Industries also to be considered 

Ceramic Industries ( as also other Industries) are affected by the 
changes due to cheaper and liberal imports. The Chennai chapter chalked out programmes essential to meet the challenges facing the industry: 
1. Cost reduction - techniques 
2. Reskilling - techniques 

1. Cost reduction: New techniques which can be introduced in the 
existing Industry were considered.- Technology like PPC- Predictive 
Process Control. which will enable production with a consistent higher yields from varying quality in the input Raw Materials - cutting costs. A note on this is enclosed by Mr. M. R. Srinivasan, of formerly Tata Ceramics who had undergone training in this technique in the U.S.A. 


2. Energy Conservation - This is a direct cost reduction . 


3. Reskilling : Training and development of cost effective and simple control techniques to test-in process or end products. Reskilling is absolutely necessary for survival in all activities production, technologies, so also in other areas like marketing and management. 


Ceramic Industry is well established, has invested vast resources in 
Plant, Machinery, Technology, Production facilities, Skilled manpower. To day this is affected due to changed conditions. 
It is necessary that these resources are profitably utilised. and the 
Industry maintain a competitive edge by reducing costs and better 
quality standards. Technological inputs can be used in the existing facilities to achieve this and progressively develop. 

Chapter members offered their Services Free and Share their 
experiences and offered to participate in the presentations. A team was formed comprising of: 


1. Mr.Bhasker Ullal - Chapter Chairman. - has over 50 years of experience in the Indian and European Ceramic Industries 

2. Mr. M. R. Srinivasan - for PPC - formerly of Tata Ceramics - 
Had undergone training in this technique. 

3. Dr. R. G. Shah for Technical Support and Test- Measurements for PPC - Is a consultant with vast experience in R & D. 

4 Mr. C. Chellam - Consultant- for Energy conservation.- 

5 Mr .Nagbushan Rao/ Mr. Diwakar for Ceramic Insulators - 

6. Dr. F.D. Gnanam - for Advanced Ceramics- Technologies.- From Anna University 

7. Dr. Vishwabhaskaran - for cost effective test and measurements also formerly from Anna University 

Programmes Proposed 


1. Cost reduction by PPC techniques - selected as this can be used in the existing factories and there is a large variations in the Input Raw materials used currently. - 

2. Energy Saving to reduce costs 

3. Re-skilling Programmes 

The team also agreed to follow up and assist in the programmes should the Industry desire. 

We were encouraged by the response by the Industry. 

1. Neyvelli Ceramics Ltd. Vadalur 

A presentation was made at the factory premises at Vadalur - on 
Predictive Process Control and Energy Conservation on the 17.01.01- by a team - Mr. Bhasker Ullal - Chapter Chairman, Mr. M. R. Srinivasan, Dr. R. G. Shah, Mr. Chellam, Dr. Vishwabaskakran. This was organised at the factory by the Vice President Mr. G. Damodaran for the convenience of the participants. The shop floor Managers , Executives, Technologists numbering 18, participated. This was a full day programme. 
 
2. Bharath Heavy Electricals - Bangalore

A full day Programme was conducted by the Team. A presentation on Predictive Process Control and Energy Conservation. by Mr. M. M.R.Srinivasan , Dr. R. G. Shah, Mr. C. Chellam, Mr. Nagabushan Rao. This programme was organised at Bangalore factory premise by Shri G. S. Mahagaonkar, D.G. M. HRD and IR Shop floor managers and the technologists and mangers from other disciplines participated . This was followed by a group discussion. 


3. Seminar Along with AIPMA 

A presentation was made at a Seminar arranged by the Chennai Chapter concurrently with the All India Pottery Manufacturers Association meeting on 5.10.2001. Dr. S.K. Bannerji of AIPMA chaired the session. there were about 50 participants. Mr. M.R. Srinivasan presented PPC programmes- Energy Conservation in the Ceramic Industries was taken up by Mr Srinivasan. The new developing technology of - Fast Sintering techniques -were explained by Dr. Gnanam. We must thank Mr N.G.Manoharan for hosting this 
meet. 

4.Carborundum Universal - Chennai

A presentation was arranged at the Factory premises by a team led by Mr.Bhasker Ullal, Mr. M. R. Srinivasan and Mr. C. Chellam . 
Approximately twenty-five persons , i.e. Managers, executives, 
technologists from the works led by Mr. John Devadas Senior Manager Manufacturing participated. This programme was organised on 9.3.2002 at the factory . 


5. Messers E.I.D. Parry Ltd. Ranipet 

This team for the presentation was led by the Chapter Chairman Mr, Bhasker Ullal, with Mr. M. R. Srinivasan, Dr. R. G. Shah - on the 27th July 2002. We thank the Chairman Shri M.V. Subbaiyya for 
scheduling this programme. This was organised at the Ranipet Factory. The participants were the Production Personnel - Shop floor managers, Technologists, R&D executives. This was a Full day programme covering all aspects Ceramic Processing Technologies. 


6. Hindusthan Sanitary Ltd.- Hyderabad

Presentation was programmed at the Factory premises at Bibi Nagar, Hyderabad- by the Team viz., , Mr. Bhasker Ullal, , Mr. M. R. Srinivasan, and Dr. R.G. Shah, This was a full day programme on the 29th July 2002. by the Vice President Mr. J.K.Somani. Mr. Sridharan with the shopfloor Managers , and executives participated in the Presentation- which was followed by a lively discussion with the enthusiastic participants . Team also took the opportunity to visit ARCI and discuss scope of testing there by the Industries. We are grateful to Dr. Sunderajan for all the help This is one complex where the Industry can have their most advanced 
and comprehensive test facility required for implementing any Advanced programmes be it Development or Trouble Shooting. The equipment are most advanced and are manned by very competent personnel. Development and work carried out were of considerable commercial interest. 

7. M Cera, Ahmedabad 


Director S.C. Kothari, organised this Presentation on the 18th 
September202 at Kadi factory of Messer's M Cera . Mr. M. R, Srinivasan and Dr, R. G.Shah formed the team . There was an enthusiastic response by the participants from the Factory and the executives , technologists, managers. Following the presentation The Team had Discussions with Mr. S.C. Kothari , N.K.Bhandari, Jt President Works, P.K. Kumath V.P. Finance and Mr. S. K. Ghatak V.P. R & D. . 


The Chapter made efforts to go to the factories with Technology and innovations . It is hoped that this will be more useful , Discussions can be in the work spot itself in the Home ground of practising mangers and technologists. Chapter had earlier conducted similar programmes at Vridhacalam for Refractory industry - This was conducted by Mr. N.G. Manoharan and on 
castables by Mr. Bhaskeran. We are proposing to continue this programmes of assistance to Industry and shortly are programming a "Out Sourcing" Seminar to assist the Industry - both Large and Small to remain viable. This will include a programme on Reskilling in the Area of Testing as mentioned above. These Programmes are in addition to those listed which were mainly in the newer Technological fields. We Look forward to another year of useful work.
